Coursework:
The mathematical course at GCSE level is based on the four
Attainment Targets outlined in the National Curriculum. These are:
·AO1 Using and Applying Mathematics
·AO2 Number and Algebra
·AO3 Shape and Space
·AO4 Handling Data
There are two pieces to complete:-
One assessing AO1 (Using and Applying Maths)
In the context of AO2 (Number and Algebra) or
AO3 (Shape, space and measure).
There are three equally weighted strands for each piece of coursework.

1.Specify problem & Plan
2.collect, process and represent date
3.Interpret and discuss results
AO1
1.Making and monitoring decisions to solve problem
2.Communicating mathematically
3.Developing skills of mathematical reasoning
Examination
Each student will be entered for one of three tiers: Foundation,
or Higher. Each student will also take two examination
papers. At each tier, Paper 1 will be a non-calculator paper.

Extra Curricular Activities:
Year 6 Maths challenge
Each year Carmel Mathematics department invites groups of young
mathematicians from Carmel’s primary feeder schools to compete in
a
competition full of mathematical activities, problems and puzzles.
Building Bridges
In November 2002 the school hall was full of spectacular bridges made
using only bamboo canes, elastic bands and the imagination and
enthusiasm of 180 Year 7 Carmel pupils. Pupils worked in groups to
solve challenging problems while learning the importance of triangles
in bridge design.
Games Club
Year 7 games Club takes place every Monday lunchtime with an
average of 30 pupils taking the opportunity of playing a variety of
games.
Chess Club
Year 7 Chess Club takes place every Monday lunchtime with an
average of 30 pupils attending. Many of these playing in a league with
fierce competition as the pupils battle for first position
