Applied Subjects
The Vocational Education Provision at Carmel has been designed to suit the needs of a wide range of students.
A range of courses are available at a variety of levels.
GCE Applied Courses
Using work-related contexts and a wide variety of teaching and assessment
methods, these
new awards offer a broad introduction to the vocational area. These awards
are designed to
provide a progression route to higher education and further training for
employment.
As with other GCEs, AS units and A2 units are equally weighted and, in
the GCE awards, each
level forms 50% of the total assessment. Aggregation, within and across
units, means that
candidates can fail a unit but still pass overall. Assessment is 33% externally
tested and 67%
by portfolio evidence, although it can be 50% - 50% in the AS GCE double
award and
42.5% - 57.5% in the GCE double award depending on units chosen.
BTEC First Diploma
This a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects
and assignments
that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
It introduces learners to particular areas of employment
and provides a good basis to go
on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSE passes grades A - C and is normally taken as a full-time course.
ICT Courses
These are available at Level 2, Level 3 and practitioner level.
All Vocational courses have parity with GCSE and GCE and
can be taken in conjunction with other A levels.
