Travel and Tourism
BTEC Level 3

The Programme

This an enjoyable course which offers you the opportunity to work in a supported environment where you are encouraged to develop your research skills, independent learning and critical thinking skills, whilst studying aspects of both tourism and travel.
The course is taught through many visits to external visitor attractions and local tourism outlets, case studies, video footage, visiting speakers, and current issues in the media. At the start of the course you will be introduced to aspects of travel, inbound and outbound travel patterns, airport codes, travel booking systems and procedures, and much more. Looking at research and travel statistics will be an important part of the course, so you will need a lively and enquiring mind.

Lessons are very active and challenging. Your views and opinions matter and are a vital aspect of each lesson. You need to like the challenge of applying your knowledge to the world of work.

You will be assessed through assignments, presentations and written examination.
There are 2 levels:
Level 3 Certificate (AS level – one year) – 30 credits made up of a minimum of 3 or a maximum of 4 assignments
Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (A2 level – two years) – 60 credits made up of the AS level from year 1 together with a further 3 assignments

Next Steps:

The course will prepare you for employment in a fast growing sector. There are many jobs around for travel and tourism, and past students have started employment in Travel Agencies, Hotels, Museums and working with tour operators. Some students have moved on to Higher Education degree courses in travel, event management, business studies and marketing.

Student Comment:
'I really enjoyed the course– I especially liked the fact that it was all based around the work I undertook. This meant I came out with an A grade as I put lots of effort in, and met my deadlines all the time. The itineraries were hard to do, but once I had done one, I realised how useful this skill would be for me in later life when organising trips, parties and visits. It has been a really useful course for me to take.'
