Sports and Physical Education
The Programme:
Aqua’s new specification is straight forward and allows students to focus on a single activity throughout the course. Content has been updated so it's relevant to sport and PE in the 21st century.
At AS, this specification will develop knowledge and skills to help understand the opportunities for and effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Candidates will be given the opportunity to build on their experience and improve their personal skills/techniques across 2 roles (player, official or coach) in a sport of their choice to improve performance.
At A2, students will examine ways of optimising performance, looking at applied exercise physiology, psychology and biomechanics. They'll also focus on topical issues such as the impact of sponsorship, business, media, law and technology on sport today.
In the A2 practical unit, students will be assessed on three areas:
• Their performance in one role (player, official or coach)
• Identification of their weakness in performance, and
• Causes and corrective measures to address the weaknesses.
What will the assessment be like?
40% Practical. Internally Assessed.
60% Examination. 1 two hour exam at both AS and A2.
Requirements:
This course would suit candidates who have a keen interest in sport and would like to follow a course with a wide range of focuses including physiology, psychology, sociology, history and analysis of sporting performance. Clearly an active involvement in sports participation as player, coach or official would be an advantage.
Next Steps:
This course is designed to equip individuals with knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in future employment in the sport related industries or for progression into Higher Education.
Learners that successfully complete the course have been known to go into a wide range of careers e.g. Medicine, PE Teaching, Sports development, Sports coaching, The Armed Forces, The Leisure Industry and Outdoor Education.
