Religious Studies
The Programme:
"The unexamined life is not worth living"
(Socrates).
Religious Studies A-Level is incredibly challenging, hugely interesting and extremely rewarding. The course covers some of the most profound questions in the history of humanity, such as 'Does God exist?' 'Is killing always wrong?' 'Why do innocent people suffer?' 'Are we really free?'
A foundation exam early in the course will
introduce you to the whole area of religious
studies. The course then splits into two
equal parts - Philosophy of Religion and
Religious Ethics. These modules are
examined at both AS and A2 levels. A
connections paper at the end of the two
years brings both elements back together
and reinforces the wide reach of religious
issues.
Whilst a GCSE in RE is helpful, it is not absolutely essential for entry onto the course. Any student who has taken GCSE RE should have achieved at least a C grade. The ability to read extensively and write good quality essays is essential.
Next steps:
Religious Studies opens many different doors. Recent students are undertaking further studies in Law, Media Studies, History, Theatre Studies, Medicine and many others, as well as the traditional routes of pure Philosophy, Theology and Biblical Studies. Graduates in Religious Studies gain employment in a wide range of areas, e.g. Teaching, Counseling, the Police, Law, the Service Industry and Medicine.
'Don't be fooled into thinking this is easy! This is the most thought-provoking course you could ever do. The RE Department support you every step of the way, and I couldn't imagine studying anything more important'
