BTEC Level 3

The Programme

This course focuses on all the national services of the Army, RAF and Navy/Marines, as well as local services of the Police, Paramedics, Fire Service, Prisons, and Coastguard. If you want to know more about these services, then this is the course for you.

This a very practical and enjoyable course which offers you the opportunity to work in a supported environment where you are encouraged to develop your research skills, independent learning and critical thinking skills, whilst studying many aspects of Public Services, health and fitness and government decision making.

The course is facilitated and managed with many visits to the Public Services and several guest speakers attend College to enhance your experience. You will have use of case studies, video footage and current issues in the media. At the start of the course you will be introduced to the different Public Services. You will have some personal development activities, both on and off site, where you will be assessed on your leadership abilities in different situations. Many of these will be led by the services, where you will get practical experience of working with both national and local organisations.

Lessons are active, thought provoking and challenging. Your views and opinions matter and are a vital aspect of each lesson.

You will be assessed through assignments, and all work is competence based.

There are 2 levels:
Level 3 Certificate (AS level – one year) – 30 credits made up of a minimum of 3 or a maximum of 4 assignments
Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma (A2 level – two years) – 60 credits made up of the AS level from year 1 together with a further 3 assignments

Assessment is 100% portfolio based.


Requirements:
Students need to have a minimum of 5 passes at GCSE grades A*-C, including Grade C English. Students must also be independent in their approach to learning as 100% of the assessment is based on portfolio work.

Next Steps:

The course gives a vocational and academic grounding in all aspects of Public Services. Students have the opportunity to consider a range of options from applying to join a public service, moving on the study Public Services at University or progressing onto an alternative level 4 (University level) course.
