Physics

The Programme:

"My goal is simple. It is complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."
Stephen Hawking

Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental science. Physics challenges our imaginations with concepts like relativity and string theory, and it leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, that change our lives. So—physics is interesting, relevant, and it can prepare you for great jobs in a wide variety of places. Shouldn't you take a physics course?

The units studied at AS are:

The units studied at A2 are:

G481: Mechanics:
• Motion
• Forces in action
• Work and energy

G482: Electrons, Waves and Photons:
• Electric current
• Resistance
• DC Circuits
• Waves
• Quantum Physics

G483: Practical Skills in Physics 1:
Internal assessment of practical skills.

G484: Newtonian World:
• Newton's laws and momentum
• Circular motion and oscillations
• Thermal Physics

G485: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics:
• Electric and magnetic fields
• Capacitors and exponential decay
• Nuclear Physics
• Medical imaging
• Modelling the Universe

G486: Practical Skills in Physics 2:
Internal assessment of practical skills.

Requirements:
A minimum requirement of two grade B's from higher GCSE Science qualifications and a grade B in GCSE Maths are needed to study Physics at AS/A2 level. The practical skills you have developed at GCSE are important and will be developed further in the sixth form, providing good training for post-18 practical science courses.

Next Steps:

Physics is an essential qualification for most engineering-based higher education courses and is an excellent platform for further study and careers in areas such as astronomy, cybernetics, geophysics, optometry, architecture and environmental health.

Physics is a very useful 'general' qualification as, like all of the sciences, it develops the skills of planning, evidence gathering, analysis and critical thinking.

Student Comment:
'Better than any other science, subject or way of life.'
