Music

The Programme:
The AS/2 Music course contains three main elements, performing, composing and analysing music. You will perform a recital for a visiting examiner on your instrument (or voice) and within an ensemble. You will compose an instrumental composition and complete several harmonic exercises. You will learn to analyse music from various periods of history through studying the musical scores.
Students are required to practise music in their own time towards their performance exam, and are expected to become involved in performance activities in College.

Requirements:
Students are expected to have completed GCSE music to a standard of B or above and must be able to read music. Students must be competent performers on an instrument or voice and this should be at a minimum of Grade 4 standard for AS, Grade 6 for A2.

Students are expected to participate in the full range of musical activities within College acting as musical mentors and role models for younger players.

Next Steps:
It is unusual for Conservatoires or Universities to offer places to students on music degree courses without first having completed A Level music. Students can access various types of music degrees, music technology courses and performing arts courses.

A wide range of careers are available to those with music qualifications in areas including Media and Broadcasting (music researcher, sound engineer, composer), Performing (within live bands and ensembles, session studio musician), Education (instrumental tuition, school/college teaching) Music analysis (music critic) Musical Co-ordinator (running theatre company, managing groups and bands, record production).

Student Comment:
‘I love the balance between practical and more formal study. I look forward to my music lessons.’
