The Programme:

This course is for students with a willingness to explore new ideas, an ability to communicate ideas effectively and an aim to work in the area of health and social care, social work, care for the elderly, working with children or perhaps a health profession such as radiography.
This is a popular course which offers you the opportunity to work in a friendly and supportive environment where you are encouraged to develop your academic skills, confidence and independence.

The course is taught through the use of visiting speakers, case studies, video footage of health and social settings and current issues in the media. At the start of the course you will be introduced to caring techniques and how life quality factors influence health. You will learn about concepts of Health, Illness and Disease and how these can be prevented. The development of empathy is a key skill to be considered throughout the first year. You will consider communication skills needed by practitioners and how, if used effectively, these benefit the client.

Lessons are active, thought provoking and challenging. Your views and opinions matter and are a vital aspect of each lesson.

You will be assessed through assignments, presentations and written examination.

There are 2 levels:
AS GCE level, single (three units)
AS GCE level double (six units)

GCE level single (six units)
GCE level double (twelve units)

Assessment is 33% examination and 67% portfolio evidence.


Requirements:

You will need to have a minimum of 5 passes at GCSE grades A* - C including grade B or higher in English and grade C or higher in Science.

Next Steps:

The course gives a vocational and academic grounding in all aspects of Health & Social Care. Students have the opportunity to consider a range of options within each vocational pathway - health, social care and early years care and education. It provides an excellent basis for a wide range of higher education courses and careers..
Past students have been successful in applying for degree courses in areas such as nursing and other health professions, teaching, childhood studies, social work, youth and community work.

This course gives an invaluable advantage for students pursuing careers in journalism, the police, the armed forces, central and local government, law and the media.
