Science Applied AS/A2
The Programme
The focus of the Applied Science course is the study of how scientific theory is used to solve problems in the real world: we look at science beyond the laboratory and how it affects our lives, industries and environment. This broad-based qualification provides a more vocational perspective, offering students opportunities to actively experience the scientific environment through work experience, links with local employers, case studies and research. It can be a better accompaniment than the "traditional" Science courses to qualifications such as Sport, Engineering or Health & Social Care.
The course also offers students the possibility of personalising their path of study and obtaining a qualification that meets their individual aptitudes and interests. The pathways students can choose include Analysis and Detection, The Environment, Manufacturing, Health and Communications.
Assessment is 33% written exam and 67% portfolio work at both AS and A2 levels.
Requirements
The minimum requirement for the study of Applied Science at AS/A2 level is two C grades from GCSE Science courses and a C from GCSE Mathematics.
Next Steps
All science courses, Applied Science is a very useful 'general' qualification, as it develops the skills of planning, evidence gathering, analysis and critical thinking.
The course prepares students to enter a variety of science or science-related degree level courses (particularly those of an "applied" nature) as well as being a good foundation for employment in careers where further scientific work-based training is offered.
