The Gustav-Heinemann-Schule, opened in 1970 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, was one of the first comprehensive schools in Germany, catering for pupils of all abilities from Year 5 to Year 13. The school is renowned for its international outlook, with 1400 pupils from a huge variety of cultural backgrounds working happily together. This success has been recognised officially with many awards and the school can be designated as "Schule ohne Rassismus" (school without racism). A feature of school life is the work with partners in many different countries in Europe, including Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Finland, France, The Netherlands and Poland.
