Science
Quote: “The true men of action of our time, those who transform the world, are not the politicians and statesmen, but the scientists. Unfortunately, poetry cannot celebrate them, because their deeds are concerned with things, not persons, and are, therefore, speechless. When I find myself in the company of scientists, I feel like a shabby curate who has strayed by mistake into a drawing-room full of dukes.”
WH Auden, 1963
The Dyer’s Hand, ‘Poet and the City’
The science department strives to stimulate curiosity, interest and enjoyment in science. To this end, as well as our academic record (in 2007, 91% of Y9 students achieved level 5+ in KS3 SATs, 84% of Y11 Dual Award students achieved grades A*-C and our 100% pass rate in all 3 ‘A’ level sciences was maintained), we aim to widen students’ experience of science beyond the school lab. Previous activities include the “Artist In Residence In Science” project, visits by a mobile planetarium, participation in ‘egg race’ competitions (e.g. the Salter’s Festival), biology field trips and visits to Durham University astronomy department and Glaxo’s laboratories.
The department is housed in the Isaac Newton building, a new (opened September 2007) and purpose-built suite of eight state-of-the-art laboratories, two resource areas and two prep rooms, as well as a science garden which will be being developed this year.
We are very fortunate in having an excellent mix of subject specialists within the department: all GCSE and A level courses are taught by specialists.
