Information Communication Technology
ICT is currently the fastest growing subject whose influence
will greatly increase as a greater proportion of our society seeks and
gain access to its many facets.
The ability to communicate effectively using the various
types of technology available and a critical awareness of their strengths
and limitations will help to forge a more ICT literate society.

Key Stage 4
Throughout the course students will use a range of software
applications including word processing, spreadsheet, database,
multimedia and web based packages to support the theoretical
components of the course.
Unit 1: ICT Tools and Applications
In this unit the development of business documents and how to use a
variety of ICT applications such as word processing, spreadsheets,
databases, presentation and multimedia software are learnt. An
understanding of file management and standard ways of working
along with using ICT in a legal and secure way is needed.
Unit 2: ICT Systems and Organisation's
Investigate how
ICT components and systems meet the needs of organisation's. Practical
experience of how ICT systems are designed and implemented will be gained.
Unit 3: ICT and Society
How ICT affects everyday life and society.
Understanding terms such
as ISDN, ASDL, SMS and WAP. Discover how modern society uses the
new technologies such as Internet, digital broadcasting and DVD.
Assessment is based on both practical and theoretical
knowledge and consists of:
One practical exam (2½ hours)

Based on the use and application of different software.
Two coursework units (equally weighted) 67%
ICT within organisations - focusing on the use of ICT within
organisations and the design and implementation of an ICT based
solution.
ICT and society - examining the role of ICT in contemporary
society on a range of individuals, groups and communities.

Computers are now becoming an integral
part of the workplace so the need for school
leavers to be skilled in this area this has
become more and more important. Carmel RC College is at the forefront of
Technology in Darlington and, as such,
Information and Communication Technology
is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 4
ensuring that our students leave with the
required skills.
Traditionally ICT has been linked to Maths
and Computing, but in tomorrow's world
ICT skills will a prerequisite to most types
of employment.
