Why Food Technology GCSE?
The GCSE Food Technology course will provide students with a unique opportunity to learn important concepts concerning food, from healthy eating principles to food preparation skills. In addition, students will learn about the world in which they live, understand modern food production and processing methods, consumerism and dietary changes. The course may well be a stepping stone to a career in food, but even if it is not, it will provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions about their own food choices. There are many very good career opportunities in this field and at the present time there is a national shortage of graduates.
What will I do?
Students will study three areas:
¨ Food Product Design, Development and Production
¨ Food as a Material
¨ Food Manufacturing and Processing
NB. Students will learn about the importance of the physical, chemical and nutritional properties of food when developing “new” products and foods. Emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills.
Students will be encouraged to use a variety of computer programs as an integral part of their work.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment: Coursework: Individual Project (60%)
Examination: (40%)
