Public Services 
The BTEC First Certificate in Public Services is designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success when moving towards a career in the uniformed services, for example, Police, Emergency Fire Services, Prison Service, Security or Armed Services.
This qualification will:
- Enable you to make an informed judgement of your suitability to a career in a public service organisation
- Prepare you for entry into a public service organisation
- Enable you to recognise and work towards acquiring the skills and abilities which enhance promotion and career prospects within the public services
- Enable you to acquire the skills for entry into higher education in a public service related field
At Carmel we offer the Level 2 BTEC First certificate which is equivalent to 2 GCSE passes A*-C.
There are 3 units of study, which all must be achieved – these are:
- Unit 2 Public Service Skills
- Unit 3 Uniformed Public Service Fitness
- Unit 6 Adventurous Activities and Teamwork for the Public Service

The units provide;
- An insight into the range of work undertaken by the Public Services and the career opportunities that exist within these services
- An opportunity for the learner to develop a range of teamwork and personal skills that are important if seeking a career in the Public Services
- An understanding of the importance of personal health and lifestyle and the impact that it has on their fitness and the need for fitness in the Public Services.
You will be graded on your achievement of 3 units of work, all of which are internally assessed, and then sent to an External Verifier, who confirms the results, or otherwise.
You have to complete ALL 3 units in order to achieve the qualification. Any units not completed will result in you not getting any GCSE’s.

The awarding body is Edexcel.
There are numerous guest speakers from a range of Public Services and there are a number of off-site activities involving Public Services.
How is the Course Assessed?
Portfolio based with a variety of assessment methods: practical, written, verbal, witness statements.
No
formal examinations.


Career Implications and
Further Studies:
Potential progression into a career in the armed forces, security services, community service organisations and emergency-related organisations. This qualification may also enable progression onto the BTEC National in Public Services and to careers in the police force, fire service, ambulance and prison service as well as customs and excise.
