Thinking about applying to become a teacher?
Ever considered training to be a teacher? There are many routes into teaching, all leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Carmel Teacher Training Partnership is officially ‘Outstanding’!
According to the latest Ofsted ITE inspection, the Carmel GTP programme has been recognised as 'Outstanding'.
SCITT PROGRAMME
As a grade 'A' provider, the Carmel Teacher Training Partnership will be starting a SCITT QTS course from September 2012.
SCITT: School Centred Initial Teacher Training. The programme will take all the strengths of Carmel's GTP course: full submersion in the school, high quality mentors and trainers from specialist practising teachers, and the dedicated support for which Carmel is renowned.
Applications are invited from graduates, or those completing their degree this summer, who wish to start primary or secondary training in September 2012.
Secondary Subjects: Mathematics*, Chemistry*, Physics*, Modern Foreign Languages*, English, Religious Education, History, Geography, Biology.
*Priority subjects
Entry requirements:
- A degree (BSc, BA, BS, etc) 2:2 and above preferred
- GCSE English and Maths
- GCSE Science (C or above if you wish to teach primary)
Application:
For 2012, application is via email to mshorten@carmel.org.uk to register interest in the first instance.

Finance:
A SCITT trainee would be able to apply for a student loan to cover the fees and also a maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company. Fees would not need to be paid upfront and they would coincide with the Student Loans Company schedule of payments.
In order to encourage good graduates to apply for teaching, all SCITT trainees would also be awarded tax free (non-repayable) bursaries by the Department for Education. These will be paid direct to the trainee by the SCITT provider in monthly instalments.

GRADUATE TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME
Unlike the SCITT, PGCE and BEd routes
the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employment based route into teaching.
Graduates are trained full time whilst being employed by the school. Training
normally takes three terms and once QTS is achieved the trainee is free to
seek employment. Training is grant funded by the Teaching Agency (TA) which
allows the school to pay the trainee a salary whilst training.
To apply for GTP 2012 the TA have created an online national GTP application portal. Please use the link below and locate Carmel Teacher Training Partnership either through the location 'Darlington' or by searching by provider (mark the provider radio button) and use the name 'Carmel'.
The graduate teacher programme (GTP) may be the right route for you. All routes into teaching require the same starting point (entry qualifications).
GTP is an employment based route into teaching. You would be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the training. The current salary is approx. £15000 per year. You would live the life of a teacher whilst you train. This would mean you would attend meetings, carry out break duties by supervising pupils and liaise with parents informally and formally.
In September you would not be expected
to teach whole classes as all CTTP GTP trainees are eased gently
into teaching. As your training progresses you would take more and more responsibility
for the teaching of whole classes.
Initially you would observe lessons being taught and share in the ideas for the planning of lessons or the creation of resources. As you progress you will be given opportunities to teach small groups or larger groups for short periods of time, maybe the start or the end of a lesson. This team teaching is an excellent way of allowing you the opportunities without giving the worry of the full responsibilities.
As you progress further, the teacher takes a step further back and allows you the chance to teach full classes, plan full lessons, prepare all the resources and assess the pupils work. This support is essential in maintaining high quality lessons. At the final stages of training you will be allowed to take full responsibility.
Throughout the programme the trainees are given direct training to support the on-the-job training gained in the classroom. This is carried out in various ways:
- A mentor to support the day-to-day work, give advice and pointers.
- A professional tutor in the school to support the trainee in following a week-by-week training plan.
- Training centrally at Carmel College in Darlington along with all the other trainees in the same phase.
All trainees spend some time in an alternative school for between 4-6 weeks in order to broaden their experience.
