Graduate Teacher Training
Ever considered training to be a teacher? There are many routes into teaching, all leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Unlike the PGCE and BEd routes the Graduate teacher programme (GTP) is an employment based route into teaching. Graduates are trained full time whilst being employed by the school. Training normally takes three terms and once QTS is achieved the trainee is free to seek employment. Training is grant funded by the Teacher Development Agency (tda) which allows the school to pay the trainee a salary whilst training.

Thinking about applying to become a teacher?

The graduate teacher programme (GTP) may be the right route for you. All routes into teaching require the same starting point (entry qualifications).

You must have:
A degree
GCSE English and Maths
GCSE Science (c or above if you wish to teach primary)

GTP is an employment based route into teaching. You would be employed by a school as an unqualified teacher for the duration of the training. The current salary is approx. £15000 per year. You would live the life of a teacher whilst you train. This would mean you would attend meetings, carry out break duties by supervising pupils and liaise with parents informally and formally.

CTTP LogoAs your training progressed you would take more and more responsibility for the teaching of whole classes. In September you would not be expected to teach whole classes. All applicants for the CTTP GTP will be eased gently into teaching.

Initially you would observe lessons being taught and share in the ideas for the planning of lessons or the creation of resources. As you progress you will be given opportunities to teach small groups or larger groups for short periods of time, maybe the start of the end of a lesson. This team teaching is an excellent way of allowing you the opportunities without giving the worry or the full responsibilities.

As you progress further the teacher takes a step further back and allows you the chance to teach full classes; plan full lessons, prepare all the resources and assess the pupils work. This support is essential in maintaining high quality lessons. At the final stages of training you will be allowed to take full responsibility.

Throughout training the trainees are given direct training to support the on-the-job training gained in the classroom. This is carried out in various ways.

  1. A mentor to support the day-to-day work, give advice and pointers
  2. A professional tutor in the school to support he trainee in following a week by week training plan
  3. Training centrally at Carmel RC College in Darlington along with all the other trainees in the same phase.

All trainees spend some time in an alternative school between 4-6 weeks in order to broaden the experience.
